Before I became a student of Christian Science, I formed the habit of taking sleeping tablets before retiring. I found it necessary to take two each night, and this habit continued for six years.

Fortunately I had a friend who was a student of Christian Science. Perceiving my need, she interested me in investigating her religion. She accompanied me to a Reading Room, where she showed me how to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. For two months I did some reading of Mrs. Eddy's writings, but I was very skeptical as to whether Science would bring about my release. In the meantime, I continued taking medicines and tablets.

One day, however, I made my first appointment to see a practitioner, and when I left her I was prepared to give this religion a trial by going without the tablets for one night. The next morning I awoke from a night of natural, refreshing sleep, far superior in quality to that which I had been experiencing for a long time. This one instance persuaded me that I could lead a normal existence without the drug, and for a period of over twenty years I have never had a sleeping tablet or a drop of medicine.
