THE INFLUENCE OF TRUTH

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

One sometimes hears the remark, "It isn't what you know, but whom you know that counts." This is often meant as a cynical reference to the power of personal influence in the business world. The young Christian Scientist who is seeking to demonstrate his rightful place in the human scheme would do well to silently reverse this superstitious utterance with the counterstatement of Truth, "It isn't our knowledge of persons, but our knowledge of God, which acts as an influence in the fulfillment of good in our lives."

One may ask, "How can knowing God aright help me to attain my position in the business or professional world, or to seek an opportunity for advancement?" Christian Science teaches that one's real work is to gain and apply the knowledge of his true selfhood as God's spiritual idea, or likeness. God's plan for His children is always wise and beneficent, for He is infinite Mind, holding each idea in right relationship to every other idea.

Man is not a struggling mortal making efforts to obtain things outside his own consciousness. Man is God's spiritual expression. Reflecting omnipotent power, he thus includes the substance of all good. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 517, 518): "Man is not made to till the soil. His birthright is dominion, not subjection. He is lord of the belief in earth and heaven,—himself subordinate alone to his Maker."
