On this program Herbert E. Eversmeyer of Dallas, Texas, told of his own experience, as follows:

In the summer of 1946, during an epidemic of polio, I became suddenly ill. During many years we had had many healings in our family through reliance on prayer in Christian Science. So it was perfectly natural to rely once again on prayer for my help. I knew my main need was to learn more of the true nature of God as well as my relationship to Him.

I prayed and studied the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy diligently for several days, but the condition seemed no better. There was intense pain and fever. So I asked for help from a more experienced Christian Scientist, a practitioner. The help was immediately given. Within a matter of hours I was completely free from all fear, fever, and pain, but a condition of paralysis had appeared. It became impossible for me to dress myself, and members of the family had to help me.

I saw I must rely even more wholeheartedly on God's healing power. I remembered the statement in the Bible, "In him we live, and move, and have our being," and I knew I would be safe in God's love and care. I found much help in Mrs. Eddy's statement from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" regarding God, divine Mind, where she writes (p. 283), "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action."

As I studied this passage I realized that God, divine Mind, is the source of all action and movement. I could see that the real man as a spiritual idea, expressing God, could never be confined or paralyzed. As I began to really understand these divine facts, I started to improve.

During this period all members of the family observed complete isolation, as required by law.

In about ten days I returned to my place of business and never missed a day of employment thereafter. I still couldn't walk and move normally, so we continued to pray according to the teachings of Christian Science. At no time did we turn to anything but prayer. In less than a month I was completely free from paralysis. Three months later I made a trip of several hundred miles without any aftereffects. There was not the slightest evidence of any illness. I had been completely healed, and this healing has been permanent.

A neighbor who is in the medical profession and knew of the polio epidemic observed the healing and shortly after said to me: "I know it was polio and I know that it was healed. I don't understand your religion, but it does heal, and heal quickly."

Now let's talk about the illuminating experience of our guest. He found the way, through prayer and spiritual enlightenment, to rid himself of the fear so prevalent in public thought regarding polio. And more than that, his complete healing—after he had developed all the symptoms—shows that the disease itself is conquered when God's love and power and law are scientifically understood and used. Now that's an encouraging statement, and let's see why it's true.

Christian Science shows that neither fear nor disease has any foundation in the law of God. As the Bible makes clear, God is indestructible Life, eternal Love, the perfect giver of all good, the source of all true health and strength. Now the health God gives could not be destroyed nor crippled by any disease, polio included. The unfailing power of God to heal the most serious disease is documented throughout the Bible and has been proved extensively for more than seventy-five years in the healing work of Christian Science. This religion teaches that God's law expresses itself in unrestricted health and perfect action—and this supreme law actually governs man. The real man is God's spiritual image and likeness. Therefore, he's not at the mercy of any disease.

Now someone might ask, "But then what is disease and why do people suffer from it? " Christian Science explains that all disease is the outcome of fearful, negative, human thinking. Contagion likewise results from fear. Disease arises from wrong thinking, from fear of disease, and from the erroneous conviction that disease is inevitable. These false mental states are corrected by the prayer of spiritual understanding, and the result is physical healing.

In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says regarding the nature of disease (p. 493), "It is fear made manifest on the body." At another point she writes (p. 368), "When fear disappears, the foundation of disease is gone."

Thus we see the remedy for all disease lies in correction and spiritualization of thought, which eliminates fear. Christian Science teaches how to do this by explaining the spiritual relationship of God and man. The result is the physical healing and joyous freedom of action which only the understanding of God can bring.

Now what are these facts? How can we make use of them? We must hold steadfastly to the truth that God is good and good only; that He is the creator of man, and maintains and governs every detail of man's true being. We must know that God is divine Spirit, and man is wholly spiritual. In divine Spirit there can be no contagion or virus, fever or pain. Such evils are unknown to God, and therefore they cannot harm man. This reasoning brings us to the conclusion that we have nothing to fear.

We need to know also that in God. divine Life, man's true being is perfect and eternal; that God controls His universe harmoniously; and that man expresses God's control in normal activity. God's man cannot be touched by deterioration, injury, or paralysis. He can't suffer a crippling aftereffect because he can't experience anything contrary to God's law. The real man expresses perfect co-ordination. Nothing can take away his God-given action and perfection. Nothing can destroy the health and strength he derives from divine Life, God. When we understand these spiritual facts, and hold steadfastly to them, we see that we don't have to be afraid. There is nothing to fear.
