"Mortal man can never rise from...

"Mortal man can never rise from the temporal debris of error, belief in sin, sickness, and death, until he learns that God is the only Life," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 289 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The recognition that God is the only Life sustained me in a time of great need. During the Second World War, I was wounded by fire from enemy aircraft as they passed over our house.

While regaining consciousness I declared over and over again, "God is my Life." Great fear for my life was expressed by those who found me, and I was taken to hospital as a dying woman. The thought of passing on overshadowed me for three days. The house surgeon informed me that my left forearm had been "shot to smithereens," and each night I was asked to take drugs in order to gain rest and sleep. I refused, however, and requested the help of a Christian Science practitioner.

Before I left hospital the surgeon was very anxious that I have bone grafted in my arm, for he did not think the old bone would renew itself at my age. I told him that I would not have any bone grafting done. Contrary to his fears, the bone in my arm was eventually completely restored. The arm has been in normal use ever since, and I use it in lifting heavy watering cans and working with garden tools. We read in Science and Health (p. 495), "Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony."
