TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

Most of us have played the game of "truth or consequences," in which each contestant must state the truth in reply to a given question or suffer the consequence of an imposed penalty. All human experience is really a game of truth or consequences. Either we know the truth or we must suffer the consequences for our ignorance.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 296), "Either here or hereafter, suffering or Science must destroy all illusions regarding life and mind, and regenerate material sense and self." All error must disappear either through the demonstration of Christian Science or through human affliction—through either "Science or suffering." Truth or consequences!

Christian Science teaches mankind that all suffering is the result of "fear, ignorance, or sin." Sin is doomed to suffer, but the pain will cease in the exact ratio that the sin ceases. Thus mortals are forced to release their hold on evil and to grasp the divine.
