About twelve years ago, after a...

About twelve years ago, after a long period of illness, during which surgery and medicine failed to improve my state of health, I was left depressed and physically incapacitated. A friend, who had emerged from a very serious family disappointment and from physical illness through his study and application of Christian Science, came to my house one day, holding a small package under his arm. "I have the greatest thing in the world," he said. "Here, I want you to read this book." The book was the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

I was an ardent reader, constantly trying to find an answer to the perplexing problems of life I was going through; so I gladly accepted the textbook, but with the attitude that it was merely another treatise on the subject of religion. Not until later did I realize that it contained the truth which Jesus said would make free and that through the study of it was to be found my complete physical and mental healing.

As I read Science and Health slowly and carefully, I found myself getting stronger; and after a period of three months I was completely healed of all the weaknesses that had held me in bondage for years. I did not know that there were Christian Science churches or Christian Science practitioners. When I learned of the latter I visited a practitioner and asked for help in finding employment. In two weeks I found a position, and I efficiently fulfilled its requirements. This was something I had not been able to do in the past.

Another healing which I have had through the study of Christian Science and which has meant a great deal to me is that of an impediment of speech. As a child I suffered a great deal from this problem. When I grew older and went through school it became a handicap in my various subjects. During a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I felt so filled with gratitude for the many blessings Christian Science had brought me that I rose to my feet and spoke of the healing I had received by reading the textbook. I sat down with a sense of inward joy at the fact that I had spoken freely in public; this was the first time I had done so. The position which I now have requires me to read audibly most of the day. I was chosen for it because of my fluent speech and good diction.

An instantaneous healing received through the help of a consecrated practitioner has brought increasing gratitude. Because of having to read all day, I became fearful of straining my eyes. I telephoned the practitioner, who said, "Sight is a faculty of Mind and cannot be impaired, injured, worn out, or strained." The realization of this truth brought immediate and complete healing.

For all the joy, health, and supply that Christian Science has brought to me, I am grateful far more than words can express; but I am especially thankful for an ever-increasing understanding and awareness of God's presence. Membership in The Mother Church and a branch church and class instruction from a consecrated teacher are additional causes for gratitude. With a full heart I say (II Cor. 9:15), "Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift," Christian Science, and for its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy, who has brought to light the healing works of Christ Jesus as a divinely natural present-day experience.—Abraham Kreutzer, New York, New York.
