The Leaven at Work

[Note: Extracts from letters to the Reading Room Division from branch church librarians]

Sydney, Australia

A young woman in the depths of despair was passing the Reading Room one afternoon when she caught sight of the sign on our door welcoming the public to the Reading Room. Although she was a complete stranger to Christian Science, she entered, not knowing why. She told the Reading Room attendant her story of a broken home and inharmonious human relationships, and said that she saw no way out but to make an end of it all. She was assured that there was a solution to her problem, however difficult it seemed to be, and after a talk in which the assurance of God's love for and care of His children was stressed, she was offered a copy of Science and Health from the lending library, which she accepted.

This young woman came back to the Reading Room a few days later and purchased a Vest Pocket Edittion of the textbook, saying that she wished to carry it in her handbag at all times. For several months she continued to come to the Reading Room to read and study the Lesson-Sermons in the Quarterly. She also borrowed the other writings of our Leader. She is now a regular visitor at the Reading Room; she purchases and reads the periodicals, and has told us that harmony has been restored to her home and that all is well with her.
