Signs of the Times
From the Window Cleaner in The Evening News Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Have we not all one Father? Has not the one God created us? Spending millions of pounds on armaments will not save us. Love, as Christ taught and practiced it, is the only thing that can save our world from despair and disaster. We must build up a new brotherhood of man based on a belief in the fatherhood of God.
Each nation must bring its own peculiar gifts and put them in the common stock. We need never, we shall never, all think alike, but that is no reason why we should not learn to trust and love one another. O that this war-weary world ... might by the grace of God be transformed into one great friendly family! And (as Alfred Noyes once wrote) that's not done by tongue or sword or pen. There's but one way—God make us better men!
