I Gave an offering to the poor
in spirit. It was not an alms
I gave. I gave not as someone
who has to him who has not. No;
a message as of morning's light
to him who sleeps is what I gave,
a light wherein his opening eyes
may see his rich inheritance
—and mine. I did not say, "I give
thee, lacking one, of my excess
supply," but, "Brother, see, I bring
thee tidings of the blessedness
that thou and I inherit from
the Love divine that gives to thee
and me a heaven-bestowing name
and title overranking all
the names construed by vanities
of men. The name bestowed on thee
makes thee the heir of heaven, and
a prince divine. No lesser man
art thou. Behold, God calls thee son."
