LOVE'S GENTLE PRESENCE

[Of Special Interest to Children]

One summer Teddie's father and mother took him and his two big brothers to the coast of Maine. They stayed at a little cottage on the beach in a bay of the ocean.

The waves from the ocean were gentle in this little bay, and all three boys enjoyed bathing there. Teddie learned to swim a few strokes and was hoping that some day he would be able to swim out to a deserted wharf beyond the beach. It was a long distance, and there were big rocks and deep water out there.

One afternoon he and a friend found a large wooden box on the shore. They pretended that this was their boat and that they had a big mission to perform. Teddie climbed into the box and, with a piece of board for an oar, set sail alone. Because it was nearly suppertime, he asked his friend to run to his house and tell his mother he would be home as soon as he had performed his mission.
