Since infancy I had been afflicted...

Since infancy I had been afflicted with boils, having had as many as eighteen large ones on my body at one time. Chills and fever always accompanied the boils, and I would be laid up for weeks at a time. However, after I became a student of Christian Science the attacks became fewer and farther between. Not having had an attack for over a year, I thought myself forever free from boils, only to awaken one moring with the largest and most painful one that I had ever experienced. It was accompanied by the usual chills and fever.

I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner and poured out quite a tale of woe, expressing self-pity, resentment, bitterness, and indignation that such a thing should happen to me. What could she say after such an outburst but, "We must love more"? Not thinking that I had anything for which to express love at such a time, I ignored her kind advice.

I called her once or twice each day, always reporting, "No progress at all." Each time she lovingly and earnestly pleaded with me to make an honest effort to express more love. After three days I became irked and dismissed her.
