After having two operations for...
After having two operations for a bone tumor on my spine I lay helpless in bed for three months. The doctors told my wife that they had done all they could and that if I should recover, I would never walk again. Thanks be to God, my wife is a Christian Scientist. She told the doctors what her religion was, and they suggested that a Christian Science practitioner come to see me. My wife called one, and he started to do work for me. I am very grateful to this practitioner for his untiring efforts, understanding, sincerity, and kindness. He assured me, in the words of Jesus (John 11:4), "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God." I did not understand what he meant at the time, but later I did.
One evening, some time after I had been taken home from the hospital, he came to see me and said that there was going to be a Christian Science lecture the following week. I told him that I wished I might hear it. He said, "We will see if you can go." I had been in bed for four and a half months and had been sitting up for only about fifteen minutes each day for the past few weeks; so when he spoke of going to the lecture I thought, "That is just a dream." In the afternoon of the day on which the lecture was to be given he called me. I was taken to the telephone, and he said, "I will see you at the lecture tonight." I wondered if he knew what he was saying and if he realized how I felt. When the time for the lecture came, however, I was there.
The following Saturday afternoon he called again and said, "I will see you at church tomorrow." When the church service began I was there. About two weeks later he paid me a visit and asked, "Have you thought about going back to work?" I decided that I would go back to work the first of the month, and when the first of the month came I was there.
