Following an airplane crash in...

Following an airplane crash in the Second World War, I suffered from hypersensitivity to light and wore dark glasses day and night. I was aided at different times by practitioners, and my wife also greatly helped me through her application of Christian Science.

Many times I felt embarrassed because of my apparent need for dark glasses. One day they were broken, and I did what our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us we can do. She says in Science and Health (p. 228): "Mortals will some day assert their freedom in the name of Almighty God. Then they will control their own bodies through the understanding of divine Science." I decided right then that as a child of God I was not dependent on dark glasses. Since that time I have remained completely free from the use of them.

When I first began attending church services after my return to this country, I was so nervous that I was able to remain only a few minutes; but I kept on. Since then such freedom has been experienced that for several years I have enjoyed the privilege of ushering.
