About three years ago, at the beginning of the summer vacation from my school, I was suddenly taken ill with severe pains in my right leg. After a few days the leg became still in the knee, and I had to lie down all the time. At that time I did not have complete confidence in the healing power of Christian Science, and a doctor was called, who said that it was necessary that I be taken to the hospital at once. He told my father that there was danger of the case proving fatal and that I would have to expect the leg to be amputated, or at the least always to remain stiff.

Thus I was faced with the decision either to rely completely on Christian Science or to be treated in the hospital by the doctor. I decided to have Christian Science treatment, and a practitioner took up the work. Through his very definite, confident declarations of Truth he checked my fear.

My ardent wish to get well was increased by the fact that after the vacation a trip by my class to the Black Forest was planned. Therefore, I became quite impatient when the healing did not progress very fast; I was always thinking of the day of departure for the trip. I had to learn that one cannot set a date for the operation of divine Principle and that I must not fasten my thought on material things, but must constantly know and apply the truth. During this time the practitioner came regularly to see me. Gradual improvement resulted, and a few days before the trip was to begin I was able to walk again. I started on the trip still limping very much, but with my thought clear. While in the Black Forest my condition continued to improve. I was able to walk a distance of almost twenty-two miles, whereas shortly before it had been impossible for me even to stand on the leg.
