SMALL THINGS

No mathematical concept stands alone,
No fraction even to the nth degree
But is related, linked, is an associate,
Commensurate in import with summation,
Within the accurate science of the whole.

And so it is with objects all around
That may appear but fractions, little worth,
Until discernment sees that they are linked
(As semiquavers form a melody)
In purposes that mold a compound whole.

Indeed, it often seems that in small things
Enfolded are larger treasures to be unveiled
Than in most things that easier meet the eye.
Here we perceive precision writ as law
To fit the perfect means to perfect end,
And in the consummation is such art
As buoys the sense with joy, makes glad tears start.
