MASTER GARDENER

Mary , beholding Jesus, thought
She saw instead the gardener.
Reaping the beauty that he wrought,
None has the will to censure her.

For none is wholly unaware
That nature flourished where he trod—
The grass upsprang, the very air
Was bird-loud in its praise of God.

Because he cultivated them
The hard and barren were restored
To fruitfulness; they touched the hem,
Attained new stature from their Lord.

Master and gardener, he came
To stake upon a desert earth
The certainty of heaven's claim
And sow the seeds of our rebirth.
