Activities for the Armed Services

[The following accounts of experiences of servicemen and servicewomen have been received by the Armed Services Department and are now shared with the Field.]

A front-line soldier in Korea was taken to a field hospital to be treated for combat fatigue. The battalion psychiatrist was asked to see what he could do for the soldier, but seemed unable to help him. Although the patient's conversation was largely unintelligible, it was apparent he wished to see a chaplain. A front-line Christian Science chaplain serving in the area was called in. He found the serviceman sitting beside a large trench sobbing like a child. The chaplain knew that divine Love was surrounding him; and this realization brought a quietness to the soldier's thought.

Fear still seemed prevalent, however, and the chaplain continued to declare silently that Love is ever present, is the only power, and meets every need. They walked back together to the hospital and continued to talk about God in the chaplain's office. The soldier asked many questions about Christian Science, and they were answered understandingly and lovingly. His request for Christian Science literature was satisfied by some pamphlets. After being in the hospital for three days, the serviceman was completely free and was permitted to return to his company. Later he asked the chaplain for a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The textbook was given to him. The chaplain saw this young man later at several Christian Science services and feels the soldier is earnest in his study of the textbook.
