An experience I had a few years...

An experience I had a few years ago helped me to clear out some mental debris from my thinking. I was ill and in pain most of the time. My husband, who is not a Christian Scientist, was so much disturbed that I agreed to go to a doctor and have a diagnosis. As I consider the situation now, I know that underneath my desire to please my husband I had a very active interest in finding out what the doctor would say. When the doctor said that I had an internal abdominal infection my fear increased. The diagnosis proved to be of no benefit whatsoever.

During the illness it suddenly occurred to me one night that what I should be wanting first of all was "the kingdom of God, and his righteousness" (Matt. 6:33). Until that time I had much preferred the loaves and fishes, the physical healing, to any spiritual progress that might unfold in my thought. From that time I tried sincerely to change my thinking.

A few days later I read in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,— and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well. Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love."
