"THE HEALER OF SIN, DISEASE, DEATH"

What does the Christian Scientist mean when he avers that Mind, God, is the healer? This question often arises, for Christian Science teaches that God knows nothing opposite to Himself and therefore cannot be aware of anything which needs healing. The Christian Scientist is in entire agreement with the prophet Habakkuk's affirmation regarding God (1:13), "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity." How, then, can God heal what He knows nothing about?

For the student of Christian Science, the answer to every perplexing problem is to be found in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." And its author, Mary Baker Eddy, answers this question over and over again, but with particular clarity in two profound sentences on page 251: "We must learn how mankind govern the body,—whether through faith in hygiene, in drugs, or in willpower. We should learn whether they govern the body through a belief in the necessity of sickness and death, sin and pardon, or govern it from the higher understanding that the divine Mind makes perfect, acts upon the so-called human mind through truth, leads the human mind to relinquish all error, to find the divine Mind to be the only Mind, and the healer of sin, disease, death."

What an all-embracing and yet simple statement of Christian Science practice this is! To this writer it avers the fact of the infinite perfection of God and His creation, of Mind and its manifestation—man and the universe. It gives the comforting assurance that this perfection may be glimpsed here and now with sufficient clarity to dispel the false beliefs which we call sin, disease, death. It indicates the unfolding of states of thought leading to such demonstration.
