GOD TELLS US DIRECTLY

Isaiah says (30:21), "Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying. This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." What a comfort this statement is to those who have a decision to make! God, Mind, is ever present and is always communicating with His idea, man. We can never be in a place where this divine guidance is not at hand. We need only turn to God, divine Love, who is always with us.

Mary Baker Eddy taught her followers that God could and would always direct them. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she states (p. 254), "When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously. He directs our path." So confident was Mrs. Eddy that God guided men and that they could be aware of this guidance that she states in "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 82): "A general rule is, that my students should not allow their movements to be controlled by other students, even if they are teachers and practitioners of the same blessed faith. The exception to this rule should be very rare. The widest power and strongest growth have always been attained by those loyal students who rest on divine Principle for guidance, not on themselves."

Why was our Leader so insistent that Christian Scientists look directly to God for their guidance? Would it not be easier for them to go to their teachers, practitioners, friends, or relatives for guidance? These latter might not always be able to advise them correctly. Only God's guidance is invariably correct. Since Christian Scientists know that God guides them directly, they need not ask others for advice about their decisions. They may, of course, should they feel the need of it, ask for help in knowing that they can be aware of God's guidance and see that no claim of animal magnetism can keep them from obeying it.
