While I was visiting at my sister's...
While I was visiting at my sister's home during a period of severe drought we were told by telephone that a bad fire was raging in our vicinity and that our property and lives were in danger. In response to a call for help, which was broadcast on a radio station, fifteen men came and worked diligently to put out the fire in the underbrush and trees. Their work was in vain, however, and the fire continued to spread, raging and leaping toward the trees which were just a short distance from the house and garage.
To mortal sense it seemed impossible to avert a disaster. My sister's husband remarked, "In fifteen minutes everything we own will be lost or destroyed." I turned completely away from the evidence of material sense and declared firmly the truth that "God is All-in-all" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 113). Also I affirmed the fact of His omnipotent care and protection, which could never permit a destructive condition to exist in reality. As I declared these truths a great sense of peace came over me. When I turned to look again the situation had changed so suddenly that all present were amazed. The men shouted: "Look. The fire is all out." There was no blaze, and the only signs of what had happened were the charred trees and the smoke rising from them. The smoke subsided in a very short time. Apparently all the fire had died out at the same time.
Christian Science sustained me in my darkest hour, the time of my husband's passing. Through the loving help of a practitioner I was enabled not to go down into the pit of grief and despair but to know Life as eternal and death as an illusion of mortal belief. The vacuum of material sense was instantly filled with peace and love, and no sense of loss, sorrow, or grief has ever entered in.
