LETTERS TO THE PRESS FROM CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

The Sunday Tribune

The Sunday Tribune Durban, Natal, South Africa

Your correspondent, ... in trying to prove that the doctrine of atonement, as taught in Christian Science, is merely speculative theology, quoted four lines from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but unfortunately he took these lines out of their context and thus robbed them of their full value.

In the two lines following those quoted, Mrs. Eddy gives the explanation of the essential part of the sacrament and the true meaning of atonement. Speaking of Jesus, she writes [p. 25], "His true flesh and blood were his Life; and they truly eat his flesh and drink his blood, who partake of that divine Life." ... These two lines make a big difference in the quotation.
