Several years ago a leading orthopedic...
Several years ago a leading orthopedic surgeon was required to testify in court regarding injuries I had received in an automobile accident. He predicted that the multiple fractures of ribs, shoulder, and arm, as well as the internal injuries I had sustained, would be a handicap to me for the rest of my days, and he indicated that I would probably never again lead a normal, active life. At the conclusion of his testimony I said to him: "You have painted a grim picture. Is it really as bad as all that?" He replied in substance, "Medical laws would indicate it to be true, but knowing you and your reliance on Christian Science, my predictions may prove wrong."
Such acknowledgment from a medical specialist of the power of Truth to heal was most gratifying. The loving help of an earnest practitioner brought rapid strides in the healing. Disfiguring facial scars were entirely eliminated in two months, and I was able to go back to work in about ten weeks, much to the amazement of many people. I am grateful to say that as a result of this complete healing I now lead an active life, participating in sports, such as tennis, swimming, bowling, and skiing, with greater success than I had ever experienced before.
I was raised in Christian Science and had the privilege of attending Sunday School; but during my later college years and my first years in the business world I left for a time the sanctuary of Love for the false glamour of the material world. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 296), "Either here or hereafter, suffering or Science must destroy all illusions regarding life and mind, and regenerate material sense and self." I am grateful that at last, after many difficult experiences, I saw my true selfhood as God's perfect child and turned completely to Truth, taking my stand on the side of good. From that time the way has been upward, beginning with church membership and culminating in the priceless privilege of class instruction from a consecrated teacher, a true education in the application of Christian Science to all phases of daily activity.
