My introduction to Christian Science...
My introduction to Christian Science came through a friend who told me of the truths that had healed her of grief when her child passed on. As I listened I felt that I had always believed these truths, and with my thought inspired by her explanations I desired to know more about Christian Science. At that time I was suffering from a physical disorder which the doctors had diagnosed as kidney and bladder trouble. Although the doctors said that I needed continued medical treatment, I stopped having it almost immediately.
I started to attend the Sunday services and Wednesday testimony meetings in a Church of Christ, Scientist, and enrolled our little daughter in the Sunday School. There she learned much and loved the new teachings. My husband also began to study Christian Science. He was suffering from an ulcerated stomach, which had distressed him for many years. He had received hospital care for the condition, but this brought only temporary relief.
As we studied the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's works while having the help of a practitioner a great deal of erroneous thinking was uncovered. We were willing to see the errors as unreal, and as they were cast out of our thought the truths we were learning replaced them. We began to recognize God as the only cause and man as created in the image and likeness of God. Both my husband and I were completely healed of our physical ailments. This was more than twenty years ago.
We have been protected through the years since then in many ways. It has been proved to us that our true substance is what Mrs. Eddy declares it to be on page 468 of Science and Health: "Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay." And she adds, "Spirit, the synonym of Mind, Soul, or God, is the only real substance." The knowledge that the truths of Christian Science are demonstrable has been a great blessing to me. To know that where-ever we are and whatever we are doing we can use these truths to bless our neighbor as well as ourselves has brought to me a great measure of peace, security, and joy.
Each day I am more grateful to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and have a greater appreciation of her lifework. It is good to know that her writings will always be available to help mankind and to perpetuate the Christian Science movement. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, as well as for the privilege of class instruction from a sincere and consecrated teacher of Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Bess N. Kohn, Chicago, Illinois.
