UNCEASING PRAYER

St. Paul admonishes us (I Thess. 5:17), "Pray without ceasing," and Christ Jesus commands us (Matt. 10:8), "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils." Through Christian Science these two injunctions may be obeyed. Prayer in Christian Science is inspired by love of God; it is spiritual communion with our ever-present Father-Mother God, the Parent of all. Healing is the answer to such prayer.

In the first chapter in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which is entitled "Prayer," Mary Baker Eddy states (p. 1), "Desire is prayer." The constant desire to know and do the will of God is unceasing prayer. And such prayer is answered proportionably as we know that since man is the offspring or manifestation of divine Mind, which is God, he is in reality coexistent with God. Being inseparable from God, man has no mind but the divine Mind, the all-knowing intelligence of the universe. Hence man's obedience to and unity with infinite Mind are not something to be attained, but are spiritual facts, which can be proved in Christian Science. Such demonstration is answered prayer, or Immanuel, "God with us."

For centuries mankind has sought to know and do the will of a God who was thought to be manlike. The desire to know such a God must have been tinctured with considerable fear of finding Him, for such a God must of necessity be variable, undependable, inscrutable, and even unkind and unjust.
