"HEAVEN-BORN HOPE"

The ages bear witness to the manifold blessings of "heaven-born hope." Mary Baker Eddy uses this phrase in speaking of the new birth, where she says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 15): "It begins with moments, and goes on with years; moments of surrender to God, of childlike trust and joyful adoption of good; moments of self-abnegation, self-consecration, heaven-born hope, and spiritual love." With the appearance of spiritual hope in human consciousness men's hearts are cheered, their lives beautified, their pathways brightened. Hope encourages, strengthens, inspires. Who that has felt this divinely derived quality stir in his heart has not courageously pressed on to the achievement of some desirable objective? Hope is thus not a vain and illusory longing for something unattainable, but an active, vital force that speeds the accomplishment of spiritual good.
