In the Christian Science textbook...

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the last chapter, entitled "Fruitage," consists of letters from many people who have been healed through perusing this book. One of my first healings took place in the same manner.

When in my early twenties, while on a vacation with other young friends, I slipped in getting out of a rowboat and struck the tip of my spine on the edge of the seat. For the rest of the vacation time I was in considerable pain, and at intervals for the next three or four years my spine continued to bother me a great deal. I consulted a surgeon in the city where I lived, and his advice was, "Grin and bear it; and if you cannot go on, we will operate."

About four years later I began to read the textbook a little each day, not for physical healing, but because I enjoyed the reading. I cannot say just how long this reading had continued when one day a friend exclaimed, "Look at her; she is sitting on the floor and without a pillow!" I do not know when the healing took place; but from that time to this, which is some twenty or more years, the condition has never returned. In the intervening years much good has come to me, and I attribute it all to the understanding of God and His government which has come to me through further reading and study of the Bible and of Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, as well as of our periodicals.
