I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness...

I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to Christian Science. My mother spent many worried years trying to shield me from sickness and germs, and I took up nursing with the desire to care for my health, as well as to be useful. But the physical improvement I obtained from this work was temporary and unsatisfactory. Neither did the churches I attended improve my health or meet my spiritual needs.

Finally I manifested a condition of cerebral hemorrhage and high blood pressure, and I became constantly apprehensive of my health. A neighbor offered me a couple of Sentinels, which stimulated my interest. The testimonies of healing they contained stirred my hope, and I bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Upon reading this book I awoke to a new concept of being, with which my reason did not conflict. The book confirmed and illuminated the teachings of our Master, Christ Jesus— all of his teachings, not just the so-called practical ones.

I was so happy to empty the medicine cupboard of its contents, to which I had become a slave, and to subscribe to the Christian Science periodicals, which I found a great comfort and strength. Sometimes there were brief suggestions of pain and fear, but the study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly or the help received from practitioners dispelled them.
