I wish to testify to the help that...
I wish to testify to the help that Christian Science has been to me during the last sixty years. I became interested in it soon after my husband passed on, leaving me with seven children, the oldest of whom was a sixteen-year-old son. The proceeds from a small life insurance policy were my only resources. Since our family had been constant attendants at an orthodox church and I had been a Bible reader all my life, I could not understand why my prayers for my husband's healing had not been answered. Our minister told me that what had happened was God's will and that I must be resigned to it.
Not long afterward a Christian Scientist came to see me. She turned the conversation to the subject of God and His love. Then she told me that Christian Science had healed her of asthma and restored her to perfect health after she had been given up by the doctors. The next day she returned with a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and gave it to me. Before I had finished reading the Preface I knew that I had the answer to my prayers. I at once began to apply Science to the care of my children.
The doctor had warned me that my children would inherit weak lungs from their father. My two-year-old daughter awakened me one night by her hard coughing. She had a high fever; so I took her into my bed and began to declare what I could remember of "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). Then I began to think of what my family would say if I did not call a doctor. I trembled so much that I could not lie still, but I clung to "the scientific statement of being." After what seemed a long time the child's body became covered with a heavy perspiration; the coughing ceased, and she slept quietly. The difficulty was overcome, and she has never had another attack. The next day I put all my medicine bottles and pills into a basket, which I put in the trash barrel. That was the end of my use of drugs.
