My childhood was not a happy...

My childhood was not a happy one, and the religion in which I was reared taught me to fear God, so that I did not know how to begin to understand and love Him. Yet I yearned to know Him better and to find a reasonable explanation for the enigma of life. This longing led me to investigate many religions and philosophies, but none satisfied me.

During World War II my health began to fail. Grief over wartime atrocities, extreme nervousness, and almost constant severe headaches left me barely able to care for my family properly. I relied on the false stimulation of cigarettes and strong coffee to get me through the day. It was at this point that Christian Science was presented to me. Although at first I was skeptical, I continued to read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and finally realized that I had been healed of the headaches. At last I was convinced, through many indisputable proofs, that Christian Science is all that it claims to be. My prayers had been answered!

Among my numerous healings have been those of influenza, painful backaches, hemorrhoids, periodic pain, many faults of character, social drinking, and smoking. The conquest of the tobacco habit was not accomplished until the desire to be obedient to the behests of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whether I completely understood them or not, was stronger than the desire for satisfaction in matter.
