New Members of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship

Miss Lela May Aultman, C. S., of Denver, Colorado, was born in Colorado. During her childhood her health was delicate, and one year illness forced her to leave school at midyear and not return. A friend, seeing her need, invited her to visit the Christian Science Sunday School, and she found its teaching so satisfying that she and her family became active Christian Scientists, and her health was restored. She continued her education, received a B.A. degree from Colorado State College of Education, and studied for two additional years at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

She was for a time employed by The Christian Science Publishing Society in Boston, and while there she served as a teacher in The Mother Church Sunday School.

Miss Aultman became a member of The Mother Church in 1923, and in 1924 she received class instruction from a loyal teacher of Christian Science. In 1925 she entered the full-time public practice of Christian Science in Scarsdale, New York, where she was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, and served as Sunday School teacher, First Reader, and on its board of trustees.

In 1946 she returned to her native state of Colorado and has continued her practice of Christian Science in Denver, where she is a member of Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist.

Mrs. Mary C. Holloway, C. S., was born in Kentucky and attended the public schools in Shreveport, Louisiana, afterward pursuing the study of voice and piano in Warren, Ohio, and in New York City.

She became a special student at Ohio State University for training in community organization, survey, financial administration and budgeting, and campaign management. Upon completion of this training, Mrs. Holloway entered the field of community welfare work and practiced it successfully for a number of years.

Having been healed in one visit to a practitioner in 1919 of a serious physical disorder, Mrs. Holloway continued the earnest study of Christian Science during the years of education, helping others who requested treatment.

She joined a branch church and The Mother Church in 1931. The following year she received Primary class instruction. Since 1940 her full time has been given to the public practice of Christian Science healing.

Mrs. Holloway has served First Church of Christ, Scientist, Shreveport, as its First Reader and as clerk of its board of directors. In Natchez, Mississippi, where she resided and practiced for several years, she served the branch church as clerk of its board of directors and as substitute Reader.

E. Howard Hooper, C. S. B., is a native of Nebraska. He received his early education in the public schools of Chicago, Illinois. In 1915 he became interested in Christian Science and joined Ninth Church of Christ, Scientist, in Chicago. The following year he became a member of The Mother Church. Upon moving to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1917, to become affiliated with the Commonwealth Steel Company, he transferred his membership to Fourth Church there, of which he is still a member. He has served as chairman of its board and as First Reader, as well as in many other capacities. During his association with the steel company he became assistant to its president. He served in this capacity until 1929. He then resigned from the company. Since 1932 he has devoted his full time to the public practice of Christian Science.

Mr. Hooper had Primary class instruction in Christian Science in 1923, and in July, 1936, he was appointed Christian Science Committee on Publication for Missouri to fill an unexpired term. He was reappointed the following year for a full year term, and after a lapse of one year he was again appointed and served in this capacity consecutively for six years. In 1940 he was a member of the Normal class of the Board of Education, at which time he became an authorized teacher of Christian Science.

George Nay, C. S., of Chicago, Illinois, was born in Budapest, his ancestors having gone to Hungary from England.

After graduating from the Latin school, Mr. Nay studied at the Polytechnic Institute in Budapest, taking special and private courses, and in 1912 obtained his diploma as architectural engineer. He continued his education in Vienna and came to the United States in 1913.

From 1913 to 1937 Mr. Nay participated in the design, supervision, and construction of many well-known structures throughout the East and Middle West. During World War I he participated in the preparation of plans for buildings for the United States Navy.

Upon his arrival in the United States he attended a Christian Science testimony meeting and promptly became a daily reader of The Christian Science Monitor. When, in 1923, he was stricken with a severe illness and an operation was said to be his only hope, he turned to Christian Science and was healed in one treatment. He then became an earnest student of this Science. In 1924 he joined The Mother Church and Second Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, and had Primary class instruction. Although he began immediately to give part of his time to the healing work of Christian Science, he followed his profession until, in 1937, he began to devote himself entirely to the public practice and became a listed practitioner.

Mr. Nay has served Second Church as Sunday School superintendent, member and chairman of its executive board, and First Reader.

John D. Pickett, C. S., was born in Ohio. He received his education in public and private schools in Atlanta, Georgia. After attending college in Atlanta and the University of North Dakota he entered the investment banking business. He later became president of his own investment firm. He was active in civic works, such as the Community Chest, Men's Garden Clubs of America, and United States Government Liberty Loan Financial Campaigns of the First World War.

After a successful business career, in 1942 he retired from active business to engage in the public practice of Christian Science. In 1936 he became a member of The Mother Church and First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Highland Park, Illinois, where he served the latter church as First Reader, chairman of the board, superintendent of Sunday School, and in other varied capacities. He had class instruction in 1938. In 1937 he served in active field service on the Illinois Flood Relief Committee of The Mother Church and as a Christian Science Wartime Worker during the Second World War.

John J. Selover, C. S. B., is a native of Santa Barbara, California. His parents became earnest students of Christian Science in 1911 as a result of the healing of his mother after she had been informed that only a surgical operation could save her life. He attended Christian Science Sunday Schools in Santa Barbara, Sacramento, and Long Beach until he was twenty. Following his graduation from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1922 he enrolled as a prelegal student at the University of California at Los Angeles. At the termination of a three-year course he entered the law school of the University of California at Berkeley, where he received an A.B. degree in 1926 and LL.B. degree in 1928.

Mr. Selover practiced law in Long Beach from 1928 until 1941, at which time he was appointed Christian Science Committee on Publication for Southern California, in which office he has served until the present time.

During his attendance at the universities he was an active member of the Christian Science Organizations and served as president and as Reader.

Mr. Selover has been a member of The Mother Church and of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Long Beach, California, since 1922. He has served the church as Sunday School superintendent, as a member of the board of directors, and as First Reader. He entered the public practice of Christian Science in 1942. He had Primary class instruction a number of years ago. In 1949 he was a member of the Normal class of the Board of Education, and since that time he has been an authorized teacher of Christian Science.
