It was twenty-six years ago that Christian Science lifted me out of despair. Whenever the way has seemed dark and difficult I have looked back to that time, and remembering the hope and joy that flooded my consciousness, I have been able to go forward with renewed inspiration.

I had been ill and unhappy for many months. An internal trouble had led to an operation, after which I was assured all would be well. However, such did not prove to be the case. A trip to Europe had been planned before this experience, but the preparations that had been undertaken with enthusiasm were now of no interest. Nevertheless I went ahead with the trip and came back to the United States thinner and weaker than ever. During that period I consulted six doctors. Each had a different theory and had restricted my diet until there was little left for me to eat or enjoy.

On the way back to the United States the thought came to me that when I reached home something was going to put me right; what it was I did not know, but I felt that it would not come through medical means. When I had been home for a few days two friends, neither of whom was a Christian Scientist, recommended that I try Christian Science, and one of them looked up a practitioner and made an appointment for me. In rather a lukewarm manner I consented to have Science help, remembering that the testimonies in a Sentinel I had read had impressed me with their genuineness.
