LETTERS TO THE PRESS FROM CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

The Sunday Tribune

Durban, Natal, South Africa The Sunday Tribune

In order to correct any misleading impressions appearing in your columns on the subject of Christian Science, may I say once more that its teachings need to be understood. Christian Science reveals the reality of the spiritual nature of all things created by God, as recorded in the first chapter of the Bible. The evil which seemed so real to the materially-minded through the material senses was unreal to the spiritually-minded Christ Jesus. What seemed miracles to them were the proofs of God's care, divinely natural to him. He said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:63). We do not read in the Gospels that he baptized anyone. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 20), Mary Baker Eddy has written: "Jesus' history made a new calendar, which we call the Christian era; but he established no ritualistic worship."

Sacrament Sundays are observed in Christian Science churches, but not with material symbols.
