FROM ANNUAL REPORTS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

Correcting Misapprehensions Concerning Our Religion

In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 191), "Your enemies will advertise for you." Misstatements in the press are sometimes opportunities for informing the public of the teachings of Christian Science.

During the year under review there have been some instances of criticism. In one, reference was made to Christian Science as a "faith healing" religion. A reply to this misconception of Christian Science was printed in full. Another critic made a similar error in a local paper, and our corrective reply was also published in full. The latter case had an interesting sequel: the writer of the letter asked for an interview, which we gladly arranged, and there was a free and frank discussion on our different points of view. We are sure that the talk resulted in a more tolerant attitude towards Christian Science.

A clergyman wrote in his parish magazine that Christian Science was one of the "tares" to which Christ Jesus referred in the thirteenth chapter of Matthew. Our letter to him was courteously received and replied to, and after a talk with our Assistant he gave a qualified apology in a later issue.
