UNDERSTANDING: OUR PRESENT POSSESSION

So often we hear one Christian Scientist say of another, "Oh, I wish I had his understanding!" And yet God is Mind, unlimited wisdom, infinite understanding, and the real man is His image and likeness. These are truths which Christian Science reveals and to which any Christian Scientist will readily agree. So when we believe that we are limited it is because we have accepted that old and subtle lie which claims minds many and a material existence more or less shrouded in darkness and mystery.

The infinite is obviously All. All therefore is Mind, and there is nothing else. The Bible reveals Mind as good, and Mary Baker Eddy substantiated and clarified this in her discovery of Christian Science. Mind knows only itself, knows only good. It knows no evil, no doubt, no fear, and no lack of understanding. It knows man as perfect and complete, enjoying unrestricted comprehension. These are indisputable facts.

What is it, then, that makes us feel that we do not have understanding, which is really right at hand? It is a mortal belief in a power opposed to God. This seeming power is supposed to create men of different races, creeds, looks, dispositions, capabilities, understanding. Christian Science, however, declares that man is God's reflection, His idea; so man knows nothing of himself, he is nothing of himself, and he can do nothing of himself. Since he has the Mind which is God, he can do only what God does and can know only what God knows. That truth does not take effect at some unknown future date, but is applicable here and now. If man is ever to be perfect, he is perfect now. He knows all now, since God does not know less today than He will in the future. God knows no time, and His reflection requires no time for development.
