CREATED IN HIS LIKENESS

In the production of material things the skill and integrity of the maker are reflected in such qualities as beauty of design, excellence of materials, and efficiency of operation. Moreover, reliable guarantees and instructions accompany the product. If this high standard prevails even in the material realm, is it not logical to assume that that which God, good, creates must show forth the perfect and eternal nature of its Maker? Consider the creator's own appraisal of His sublime handiwork the universe and man (Gen. 1:31): "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." That which is "very good" must be without defect or destructive element, and not subject to impairment.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 335): "Mind is the divine Principle, Love, and can produce nothing unlike the eternal Father-Mother, God. Reality is spiritual, harmonious, immutable, immortal, divine, eternal." Why have mortals generally failed to share this glorious view? Because, instead of turning to divine Mind, Truth, for a right understanding of God's handiwork, they have sought their information from mortal mind, which Jesus defined as a liar. The Way-shower was never deceived by mortal mind and its falsities. Perfect God, forever expressed by His image and likeness, perfect man, based Christ Jesus' great works. Recognizing divine Mind and its manifestation as the truth of being, the Master proved the nothingness of the carnal mind's ignorant sense of man as material and discordant.

The significance of the wonderful healings brought about by Jesus through his clear understanding of man created in God's image, the world failed to grasp. It supposed that the Master's awe-inspiring works were merely an impressive exhibition of supernatural power. And through the succeeding centuries mankind continued to be deluded by mortal mind and its false sense of man.
