THE HOLE IN THE WALL

"The starting-point of divine Science," declares Mary Baker Eddy (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 275), "is that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind,—that God is Love, and therefore He is divine Principle." "Therefore"—what a wealth of meaning is in that word! Do we ever think of Principle as some soulless, relentless force, hard and cruel? But all that is hard, cold, or cruel is the very antithesis of the nature of God, as revealed by Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.

When we accept the truth that God is Principle because He is Love, then does it not follow inevitably that Principle, God, must always by its very nature act to bless, heal, comfort, and bring all things into harmony? And if "God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and ... there is no other might nor Mind," then there can be no situation, however apparently hopeless, desperate, or long-standing, from which we cannot be extricated by the might of this all-acting Principle, Love in operation.

Then how do we avail ourselves of this glorious truth of God's beneficent nature and of His almighty power for good? The answer is, "Through prayer." And the question, "What is prayer?" has been answered for all time in the first seventeen pages of Science and Health, the Christian Science textbook. That first chapter, entitled "Prayer," has literally opened the gates of heaven to thousands who were puzzled and distressed because their most earnest prayers seemed unavailing.
