Prayer, the greatest power in the world! ... Through the centuries it has been the theme of devout and effective Christian living, the hope of the hopeless, the joy of those who have found triumph through the use of this particular means of grace. Prayer is today, as it has always been, the refuge of millions of Christians. ... True prayer flies on two wings—supplication and thanksgiving. ... Prayer is the highest art of religion. It is the Christian's ultimate refuge, as well as his daily strength. ... Prayer transcends words. It is the soul's "sincere desire, uttered or unexpressed." ...

The importance of earnestness in prayer can scarcely be overestimated. Phraseology is not prayer. We recall the minister who was reported to have made "the most eloquent prayer ever addressed to a Boston audience." ... Yet it was the simple "God be merciful to me a sinner" that Jesus praised, while he criticized the formal, complacent praying of the Pharisee.
