DIVINE SCIENCE: "ONE WEB OF CONSISTENCY"
Truth demonstrated is consistency, for Truth's nature is eternal and changeless. Truth is one in quality throughout, there being no part or quality out of character or in conflict with any other; and man, infinitely and perfectly reflecting the wholeness of Truth, is consistent. These truths, taught and proved in Christian Science as demonstrable realities, have the certain effect, as they are understood spiritually, of an ever-increasing consistency in individual human activity. What divine Love prompts us to begin, we will finish. That which intelligent Truth motivates us to promise, we will fulfill. The loving impulsion to serve, which emanates from Principle, we will carry out in the face of opposition.
Our inspiring example in regard to the last-mentioned fact is Christ Jesus. To those who opposed his healing on the Sabbath day he explained, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work" (John 5:17). His persecutors did not understand the supremacy of divine authority over human; but their lack of perception did not prevent Jesus from consistently maintaining the life-giving facts of Truth and the healing consciousness of Love. As a result of his spiritual clear-sightedness not only were the sick, sinning, and dying restored to normalcy, but Jesus himself proved to humanity his full sonship and hence heirdom with the Father, his eternal, living Principle.
Love is still telling us to serve, and the highest service is that which is the most unselfed, that which is based on Spirit instead of matter. When we realize our true identity to be the image and likeness of God, we are willing to think of ourselves as the reflections of God, but consistency's requirement that we therefore see the universe and our brother man as such is not always followed. The necessity for so doing was brought forth very forcibly to a young man about to enter the Army prior to the Second World War. A carbuncle had formed in such a manner as to confine him to bed, in great pain. Holding to the fact of his identity as spiritual and perfect afforded him partial relief from the pain, but not healing.
