A Light unto Our Communities

[Extracts from letters received from branch church boards and Reading Room librarians.]

The primary reason for moving our Christian Science Reading Room to its present ground-floor quarters was the letter from The Christian Science Board of Directors dated July 30, 1948. Another reason was the hope that by this means we would let our light shine in a better way and would more effectively present Christian Science to our community.

Our hopes have been more than realized. There is hardly a moment during the day or the evening that the display window is not presenting its healing message to at least one reader. Sales of authorized Christian Science literature are more than three times what they were in our former second-floor location. Best of all, many of those who come into the Reading Room to inquire about Christian Science, after reading at the window or in response to newspaper advertising, return regularly to study, and they also attend our church services.

At the last communion service a majority of our new members were neither young people who had finished Sunday School nor former members of other branch churches, but were residents of our neighborhood who had never before been members of a Church of Christ, Scientist. While this good cannot be traced directly to our more accessible Reading Room, we feel that it is another evidence of the progressive thinking and awakened zeal which led us to take the forward step of opening a ground-floor Reading Room.
