Through reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I was healed of pain and weakness from which I had suffered since childhood. In the year 1895 I was appointed a county delegate to attend a convention of a large religious group held in Boston. Before I left home my family physician told me plainly that he could do nothing more to aid me in gaining my health. To every new pastor stationed where I was living, I presented the question as to why the church did not heal sickness as well as sin, quoting from the Bible (James 5:15), "The prayer of faith shall save the sick," but I received no satisfactory answer.

Upon arriving in Boston, I stepped onto a crowded streetcar, and a woman took her young son on her lap and offered me his seat. In talking with her I asked if she could direct me to a specialist who might help me to overcome my physical difficulties. She replied that at one time she had gone to many specialists, but had received no relief from a condition which had confined her to her bed for six years. She added, "Christian Science healed me."

That evening the woman sent a copy of The Christian Science Journal to me at the house where I was lodging. It was the first one I had ever seen. I read until midnight, and the pages seemed illumined. The following day a friend and I found the Church edifice and went to The Christian Science Publishing House. We told a gentleman there our mission, and in a few minutes he returned with a Journal and showed us the list of names of available practitioners and advised us to consult one of them.
