It was in 1934 that a friend of the family, in answer to an inquiry I had made as to how I could learn something of Christian Science, gave me a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At that time I was suffering from a great sense of frustration because of business and financial failure.

The chapter on Prayer impressed me greatly, and I wanted to learn more and more of what Mrs. Eddy wrote. Through the study of the Bible, of the textbook and other writings of Mrs. Eddy, and of the authorized literature, I have come to realize more and more the nature of God and of man's relationship to Him. It is a joy to be able to relate just a few of the blessings that have been mine as a result of this revelation. I have been healed of all desire to gamble, which had taken a great hold on me. All of this seems like a dream to me now, and I have a sense of peace and contentment that is unexplainable.

Prior to my taking up the study of Christian Science I had suffered from a torn ligament in my leg. I was under a doctor's care and had to use crutches for about six weeks, and still more time elapsed before I walked normally. One day when I was still young in Science, I was transferring from one streetcar to another and running rather rapidly, when all of a sudden I tore a ligament in the other leg. This time I shuffled into a store and telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, the same one who had given me the textbook originally. She lovingly took up work for me immediately.
