The early training and education...

The early training and education I had was based on the belief that matter is real and substantial. Living for me was a serious problem and was filled with disappointments and sickness.

In my teens I was sent to a tuberculosis sanatorium with the prediction that I had only three months to live. At that time Christian Science was presented to me as the answer to prayer. In six weeks, completely healed, I began to sing at the services of a Christian Science Society. Proof after proof of the substantiality of Spirit in the healing of pneumonia, influenza, ptomaine poisoning, and many other troubles came to me as I relied more and more on God.

Class instruction in Christian Science was of great help. With its help we were able to rear a fine son. He wrote me when he enlisted in the Navy: "Mother, never fear for my safety. The 'Big Skipper' is guiding and guarding my every moment, and I will return bigger and better from the experience." He did return after three years in battles in the South Pacific with a record of never having been in sick bay.
