"THE EMPHATIC PURPOSE OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE"

Christ Jesus came to restore righteousness and to save mortals from the effects of sin. He healed both the sick and the sinner. The truth he spoke and lived brought freedom and peace to the afflicted. His demand to one he healed was, "Go, and sin no more" (John 8:11), indicating that it was the destruction of sin, as well as of sickness, to which thought was directed. He is known as our Saviour because he showed forth the Christ, which saves or redeems us from the scourge of sin, disease, and death.

The healing of the body begins with a change in the thought, and the thought is changed only by the purity and loveliness of the spiritual and Christly influence. The mission of Christian Science, like the mission of the Master, is primarily the destruction of sin, because sin is the root of all discord; and permanently to destroy a weed it must be plucked up with its roots.

Mary Baker Eddy, in response to the question, "Is healing the sick the whole of Science?" replies in part (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 2): "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science. It is only the bugle-call to thought and action, in the higher range of infinite goodness. The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin."
