MAN'S FUNDAMENTAL RELATIONSHIP IS WITH GOD
Man's fundamental relationship is with God. Today, when government and governments seem to be increasingly complex, this axiom may sometimes be forgotten. In the desire to procure the welfare of all, increasing reliance may be placed on human means and methods and too much stress placed on man's relationship with society or with the state. While these present human relationships cannot be ignored, they are only temporary and secondary, and the understanding of man's primary and basic relationship with God must be established.
Genesis clearly states that "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him" (1:27), and it is upon this statement that the teaching of Christian Science rests. The perfection of God attests the perfection of man. God and man are one in being, as perfect cause and perfect effect. Cause and effect are not the same, but they are inseparable and are one in quality, though not in quantity. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says (pp. 470, 471), "The relations of God and man, divine Principle and idea, are indestructible in Science; and Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history."
The perfection of man, the idea of God, admits of no loss or shortage, no limitation or restriction. Perfection must include abundance and satisfaction. It must embrace all goodness and happiness and express absolute fulfillment and completion. Man is at all times conscious of this perfection, which he derives from his perfect source, divine Principle, and there is no other source or power which can usurp the infinite omnipotence.
