FORMIDABLE FAVORS
Those who receive healing through the gracious power of Christian Science have touched divine reality. At first they may believe that they merely feel better humanly, or perhaps that they feel quite healthy; but eventually they must realize that they have touched the substance of a new sense of life —life in Spirit, which is the heaven of true existence. "But Heaven's favors are formidable: they are calls to higher duties, not discharge from care; and whoso builds on less than an immortal basis, hath built on sand," says Mary Baker Eddy on page 1 of her sermon "Christian Healing."
A Christian Science healing blesses the human self. It is compassionate because it expresses the will of Love. But its deeper implication is always that the false mortal sense of life has dissolved in some measure before Love's eternal presence, and that the real man, God's idea, has been proportionately revealed. Hence the immortal basis of spiritual progress and the demand of Christian Science that every effort be made to reveal individual man in the fullness and completeness of his activity in Spirit. This calls for pure motives in human lives and constantly increasing power over all that opposes God's will. It demands an ever-widening usefulness in the Father's service, for Christian Science demonstrates true concepts of man and his infinite capabilities.
When in 1866 to all appearances Mrs. Eddy lay at death's door, hopelessly injured by an accident, she glimpsed the truth of existence. The threatening and disheartening pictures of the physical senses gave way before her appeal to God as she realized His allness and the great fact of man's perfection and life in Him. This revelation so spiritualized her thought that she was instantly healed.
