Signs of the Times

Rev. Lynnton Elwell in a column in the Express, Lebanon, Oregon

To be a great people we must be a Bible-reading people. To be God's children we must with diligent effort handle with care this Holy Word and make its teaching the very theme of our lives. To be free, the freedom which the Son of God bestows, we must continue diligently wit h this Word.

We have long quoted from the Bible this verse which says, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In doing so we have done injustice to ourselves and to the words which Jesus spoke, for here is the entire quotation: "If ye abide in my word, then are ye truly my disciples; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:31,32, Am. Stand. Ver.). Jesus said the ingredients of freedom were truth, discipleship, and continuing in his word. Put it this way —you aren't free unless you know the truth. You don't know the truth unless you are truly his disciples. You aren't truly a disciple without abiding in his word.
