GOING ON

Even to every Thomas it must be
Plain that it does go on—not fatal breath
Imbibed at birth, vapor which only draws
The bewildered mortal daily nearer death.

For what is Life but what the living prove,
Embracing all in purified affection—
Our normal day's work one of signs and wonders—
Disciples preaching again the resurrection?

Nothing can drown that voice of one on Patmos
Who saw the dead alive. Nothing succeeds
In making God or man extinct, in parting
The loved child from the vital force he needs.
