For over twenty years I have had...
For over twenty years I have had the great privilege of being a Christian Scientist. From the first day, I recognized Christian Science to be a practical religion and never doubted the power of the truth to eradicate discord of any kind; hence I have had the joy of proving in daily experience that it is indeed "God with us."
I did not come to Christian Science for healing, but to find a satisfying religion. I had been a member of an orthodox church from twelve years of age; but al though I was active and faithful, it never gave me the spiritual inspiration I desired. A new-found friend told me something of the teachings of Christian Science, and in just a short while I knew it was the religion for which I had been seeking. I started immediately to attend a nearby church, and as soon as I had completed a year of serious study of the Bible, our textbook, Science and Health, and the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy, I applied for membership in a branch church and in The Mother Church, the most joyous steps a new student can take.
One of the first healings I had was in regard to inharmony in the home. For a number of years a member of my family seemed to be so unreasonable and dominating that I was often tempted to move away. This relative was in Europe when I became interested in Christian Science. I dreaded her return, for I was having the wonderful experience of getting acquainted with this blessed truth, and I did not want anything to mar it. I mentioned this to the friend who had interested me in Christian Science, and she said, "You need not fear; just think rightly, and you will find that all is well." I found a statement in the textbook which helped me (Science and Health, p. 37): "Consciousness of right doing brings its own reward." I saw that this fear resulted from the expectation of penalty, rather than of good; and having faith in the truth, I overcame this dread. The day she arrived was a joyous one; there was no inharmony. And thereafter, through my maintaining the truth of being, never again was there any discord between us.
