"YE ARE MY WITNESSES"

When Christ Jesus was brought before Pilate, the Roman governor, and questioned as to who he was and what he had done, he included in his answer these memorable words (John 18:37): "For this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice." His reply might be paraphrased to express the purpose of every student of Christian Science: "For this cause I come into every human situation that I may bear witness to the truth of Christian Science. Everyone reach for the truth will respond to this witnessing to Truth."

A witness in court is usually one who was present at the event and reports what he saw and heard. His testimony is based on that which was visible to the material eye and audible to the material ear. A Christian Scientist in the court of daily human contacts bears witness to the truth and reports what he has seen, not through material sense perception, but through spiritual understanding. When he speaks from this standpoint, he speaks with authority. Jesus once said in answer to Nicodemus" puzzled questions (John 3:11), "We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen."

The boy Jesus spoke that which he knew about God that day in the temple at Jerusalem when he was found "sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions" (Luke 2:46). How penetrating the fearless questions of the twelve-year-old boy must have been! Already he had learned to know God as Father and himself as His beloved Son. Out of that conscious divine relationship grew the joyous realization. "I and my Father are one" (John 10:30). Who spoke with authority that day in the temple, the intellectually trained doctors or the spiritually enlightened boy? The answer is obvious.
